It’s hard to say that the world is clamoring for any more “experiemental indie-rock outfits” or “hipster bands from Austin,” but the Octopus Project is, nonetheless, both of those things. Forgiving their predictable niche filling, though, this creative electro-pop four-piece does separate itself from the pack in at least one important regard—solid songwriting. A mix of fuzzed out guitar, drum machine loops, and video game synths covers the so-called “experimental” bases, but the Octopus Project is not afraid of melodies, and their output of catchy instrumental numbers has been pretty admirable.

After the release of the Identification Parade LP generated some initial buzz in 2002, the band has earned the majority of its recognition for an energized live show that regularly features group members swapping instruments in the middle of songs. Recent collaborations with similarly minded bands like Black Moth Super Rainbow and Black Lipstick have also escalated the Octopus Project’s profile, as they continue to tour in support of 2007’s well received Hello, Avalanche.
